WHO IS EHD?

22 April 2022

We asked the founder of EHD, Elizabeth Hales, some questions.

1// Can you tell us about how and why you started EHD?

I started Elizabeth Hales Design in 2016 as a product developer for interior decor. After developing a passion for the hard finishes of interior design and wanting to bring my design eye into the interior design field, Elizabeth Hales Design transitioned to an interior design. We have been doing interiors for the last 3 years. Just this year, 2022, we launched the addition of architecture to the firm. I noticed there was a significant gap in the transition of projects from architecture to interior design and I found that having both an architect and interior designer in house, working collaboratively, on the projects from the very beginning creates functional and cohesive design.

2// Where do you find Inspiration?

I myself come from a mix of rich culture and believe that is what fuels inspiration. I also travel to see, and be inspired by, other cultures and the way they display that in architecture and interior design. My team also brings a diversity of experience and culture that adds to our pool of inspiration. I don’t believe in following trends especially when it comes to the design of a space because trends come and go but buildings don’t, or at least they shouldn’t if designed well.

3// How do you work as a team?

I have architects and interior designers in house. Each interior designer is given a project, if the project includes architecture they will work on with the architect. I’m involved in the process throughout and sign off on all design. Together we work collaboratively, asking questions, sharing opinions, and offering support. Architects have a more structural vision of design and interior designers have more of a creative and aesthetic vision. By combining the two we achieve beautifully elevated and functional cohesion in our project design.

4// What is your philosophy when it comes to design?

Minimalism over decoration. And blending function and aesthetics.

5// Tell us a bit about building your brand?

I have a very specific aesthetic and believe that is what sets EHD apart. It has always been important to me to communicate that aesthetic consistently through our branding and process. This helps us find the clients who need us and who’s vision aligns well with ours, so they receive the end result they came to EHD for.

6// What’s the best advice you have received?

For building a business the best advice I received was to understand and recognize my weaknesses so I can find people with those strengths. And know that owning a business is a commitment, you have to be adaptable to the demands of the industry and the needs of your business.

For design the best advice is to be authentic to yourself. Trends, designers, and social media is constantly changing and influencing life, being a follower in the industry is not necessarily authentic. Embrace your own vision and others will appreciate it and value that in your work.

8// What are your future goals for EHD?

We want to keep expanding projects across boarders and growing our team. One goal is to establish ourselves in other locations, we hope to have offices on the east coast in the near future. As we continue to grow in the commercial industry we hope to become recognized.

9// What’s something you want all your clients to know?

We care about your vision and the experience you have throughout your project. It is likely one of the largest investments an individual or business makes. It should be enjoyable, you should feel like your voice is being heard and have a team that is on your side to improve the process. We hear, understand, and value what you say. In valuing that, we do our best to advocate for you through the process.
