The Evolution of Modern Architecture: A Journey through Time

This article relates to: Palm Springs: Luxury Architecture As An Oasis

Modern architecture is the distinct style of some of the most iconic and innovative designs ever created. Designers like Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Rem Koolhaas, Frank Gehry, Le Corbusier, Zaha Hadid, Jeanne Gang, and many more, have made modernism one of the most well-regarded styles of architecture. However, modern architecture has continued to evolve and change over time, often redefining itself and its values. Here is a review of where modern architecture started and where it’s going.

ORIGINS OF MODERNISM

Modernism first began in the late 19th century as a revolutionary response to revolutionary changes. With the ability to easily communicate across nations for the first time, world exhibitions were all the new rage to test out these new ideas of “modern” architecture. The Crystal Palace in London and the Eiffel Tower in Paris are a few examples of the first exhibitions that sparked curiosity and intrigue in the world of architecture, opening designers' eyes to new potential.

Frank Lloyd Wright was one of these designers who began designing in this new modern style, creating homes that were integrated into the landscape and had organic materials, open floor plans, and terracing flat roofs. On the other side of modernism, there was the Bauhaus School which focused on the more manufactured, abstract, and minimalist side of architecture. However, after World War II people started to criticize this style, saying that these boxy concrete designs made homes feel cold and clinical. Enter the age of postmodernism where designers began to play more with color, ornamentation, whimsical use of columns, and curves. It wasn’t until the 21st century that we saw the comeback of modernism with mid-century design proving that modern homes didn’t have to be cold concrete boxes.

WHAT IS MODERN ARCHITECTURE TODAY?

Luxury Modern Architecture

Fast forward to today and modern architecture is still pushing the boundaries of design. Here at EHD, we believe a modern home should be grounded in its site context, use sustainable and high-end materials, feel organic, use natural light, be designed with environmental factors, and be comfortable to live in. While a house should be stunning from the outside, it is equally important that it is functional. Finding this balance is what makes a design successful.

In all, modern architecture is a mindset that responds to current trends, the latest innovations, and geography. By understanding the set of values associated with modernism, we can better assess the needs of our clients and apply these design aesthetics accordingly. Modern architecture provides a strong foundation for us to design on, but we are excited to continue to push the boundaries of design and see what the future holds.
